Lott Finalists Chosen in NFL Draft

Last December, at his second appearance at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach for the Lott IMPACT Trophy awards presentation, Manti Te’o told everyone: “I love it here in Newport Beach and the Pacific Club feels like home, I hope the Chargers draft me.”

Well, four months later, Te’o got his wish, being selected by San Diego with the sixth pick in the second round. “To go to San Diego, I’m just so excited,” he said.

A finalist in 2011, Te’o, the highly acclaimed linebacker from Notre Dame, won the Lott IMPACT Trophy in 2012.

“Te’o can step in and play for us,” said Charger General Manager Tom Telesco. “He’s the most instinctive and productive linebacker in the draft.” The Chargers moved up – by trading with Arizona – to get Te’o.

Lott IMPACT Trophy finalist Jarvis Jones of Georgia was a first-round choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was the sixth straight year a Lott finalist was chosen in the first round.

“He’s a special player,” Pittsburgh General Manager Kevin Colbert said of Jones. “He’s a solid kid, a great player.”

Another finalist, Linebacker Arthur Brown of KansasState, was selected in the second round by Baltimore. Chase Thomas of Stanford, also a finalist, was undrafted and signed a free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints.

Winner Manti Te’o, Keynote Speaker Condoleezza Rice Give High Marks to Lott IMPACT Trophy

Accepting the 9th Annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te’o was not shy about his feelings: “This event I hold dear,” he said. “It was here I made maybe the best decision of my life.”

That was a year earlier when Te’o, a 2011 finalist (Won by Boston College’s Luke Kuechly), announced he would return to Notre Dame for his senior season.

“This is like a second home to me,” continued Te’o. “When I come back the people greet me so warmly, like I come here all the time.”
Te’o’s remarks were but one of the highlights of the sold out black-tie gala. Earlier in the evening, former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was effusive in her praise of the Lott Trophy: “These are the best of college football student-athletes. They reach beyond themselves. They are people of IMPACT.”

IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity, the requirements of the Lott IMPACT Trophy.

TE’O NAMED LOTT IMPACT TROPHY WINNER

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te’o was named the 2012 winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy at the annual awards banquet here Sunday night.

Te’o is a 6-2, 255-pound senior from Laie, Hawaii who led the Irish in tackles each of the last three seasons, including 103 this year when Notre Dame went undefeated and was ranked No. 1 in the country.

It was the seventh national award for Te'o in a week, making him the most decorated defensive player in college football history.

The other finalists for the award were Arthur Brown of Kansas State, Jarvis Jones of Georgia and Chase Thomas of Stanford.

“This is a like a second home for me,” said Te’o, who was a finalist for the award in 2011. “I love coming here.”

Named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, the Lott is awarded to college football’s Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The Lott Trophy is the only college football award where character counts. The student-athlete must be making an IMPACT on the field as well as off the field in such areas as academics, community and leadership. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

Notre Dame will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund in recognition of Te’o's achievement. Each of the runnerups schools received $5,000.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice was the keynote speaker at the event.

FOUR FINALISTS NAMED FOR 2012 LOTT IMPACT TROPHY

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation has named the four finalists for the 2012 Lott IMPACT Trophy. They are Georgia Linebacker Jarvis Jones, Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te’o, Stanford Linebacker Chase Thomas and Kansas State Linebacker Arthur Brown.

The winner will be announced at the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy banquet Dec. 9 at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach.

The event will be televised live by FOX Sports, beginning at 7 p.m. PST.

The keynote speaker will be former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The award goes to the defensive player who has had the biggest IMPACT on his team, both on and off the field. The IMPACT acronym is Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

All four players are on some of the elite teams in the nation. Georgia is 11-1 and headed to the SEC Championship Game against Alabama this weekend; Notre Dame is 12-0 and ranked No. 1 in the country; Stanford is 10-2 and will play UCLA Saturday for a berth in the Rose Bowl and Kansas State is 10-1. All four teams are ranked in the Top 8 in the nation – Notre Dame at 1, Georgia at 3, Kansas State at 6 and Stanford at 8.

Despite missing two games with an injury, Jones has 19.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. Te’o is second in the country with seven interceptions and leads the Irish in tackles with 103. Thomas has 12.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and 5.5 sacks. Brown leads Kansas State with 80 tackles.

Each of the finalists has been highly recommended by their universities, citing their strong academic work, community involvement and team leadership roles.

The IMPACT Foundation will award $25,000 to the general scholarship fund of the winner’s university with each of the runnerups’ school receiving $5,000.

Simon was a semi-finalist a year ago and Te’o a finalist. There are four linebackers, two defensive linemen and two defensive backs on the list. Georgia (David Pollack in 2004), LSU (Glenn Dorsey in 2007) and Ohio State (James Laurinaitis in 2008) have all had previous winners.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy recognizes the student-athletes throughout the nation who have had the biggest IMPACT on their teams both on and off the field. Performance: Defensive leader of undefeated and No. 1 ranked team in the country. Leads team with 69 tackles; has six tackles for loss; and two interceptions. Two-time team captain.

Character: Kansas State Head Coach Bill Snyder: “Arthur is as complete a student-athlete as I have had in our program. He is a devout family man, a man of great faith, highly respected by his teammates, coaches, our faculty and administration and an excellent leader within our program. He’s both a captain and a player representative. He possesses the intrinsic values we hope for in our players and our own children.” Completed all classes needed for degree prior to this season.

Travis Johnson                San Jose State (7-2)
Defensive End    Senior, 6-3, 244 (Sunnyvale, Ca.)

Performance: Among the leaders in the country in both sacks and tackles for losses. 4th in sacks with 11 and 3rd in tackles for loss with 17. Twice the WAC Defensive Player of the Week this season. Active career leader with 30 sacks.

Character: An academic all-conference selection four straight years. Team captain. Former Eagle Scout. San Jose State Head Coach Mike MacIntyre:”I can’t say enough about what a phenomenal young man he is. He’s the heart and soul of our defense.” Majoring in kinesiology and plans to be a physical therapist.

Jarvis Jones                           Georgia (8-1)

Performance: On every mid-season All-American team. Twice the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week. Has 17 tackles for loss and 10.5 quarterback sacks, ranking first in the SEC in both categories. Former Georgia Head Coach Vince Dooley: “I think his performance against Florida, was the greatest overall performance by a defensive player in the history of Georgia football.” He had 13 tackles, 4.5 for losses and recovered two fumbles in the game.

Character: Dixter Fisher, Director, University of Georgia Physical Plant Division: “During my 20 years of working with student athletes, I found Jarvis to be one of the most humble and dedicated students I have ever encountered. Not only is Jarvis an involved member of the tam, he also strives to be an active participant in his community. He excels at being a leader among his teammates and peers at the University of Georgia.” Volunteers at local hospital and makes frequent appearances at his high school.

Safety            Senior, 6-2, 208 (Geismar, La.)

Performance: Considered the top safety in the country. On most mid-season All-American teams. Semi-finalist for other major defensive awards. Has 57 tackles, 2 interceptions this season. Projected first round draft choice.

Character: Has the highest grade point average of any player on the LSU football team. Will graduate with marketing degree this December. Had a 4.46 grade point average in high school and graduated sixth in his class. Volunteered for FOCUS (Focusing on College and Unlimited Success) Program this past summer.

Character: Lance Anderson, Stanford Linebacker Coach: “His biggest asset is just what a smart football player he is. He has a great football IQ. Even more important than that is his leadership in the off-season weight room and all the workouts. He understands what it takes to be successful and can serve as an example for the younger kids.” Thomas is a communications major at Stanford.

UCLA’S ANTHONY BARR NAMED LOTT IMPACT PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – UCLA Linebacker Anthony Barr has been named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week.

The 6-4, 235-pound junior from San Pedro, Ca., had an impressive game Saturday night in UCLA’s 44-36 win over Washington State on the road that improved the Bruins to 8-1 on the season. Barr had 2 ½ sacks, one for a safety, 8 total tackles, a blocked kick and a quarterback hurry. In his first season on defense (he spent his first two years on offense), Barr leads the Pac-12 in tackles for losses with 17 and sacks with 11.

In recognition of Barr’s performance, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the Lott IMPACT Trophy, will make a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund at UCLA.

GEORGIA'S JARVIS JONES NAMED LOTT IMPACT PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – Georgia Linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had a memorable game against Florida, has been named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week.

Jones was a constant disruption to the Florida offense in a big 17-9 win for Georgia (7-1). The 6-3, 240-pound junior from Columbus, Ga. recorded 4.5 tackles for loss (three of them sacks), forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles and had a career high 13 tackles. He recovered one of the fumbles late in the game when Florida was driving for a score.

In recognition of Jarvis’ performance, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the Lott IMPACT Trophy, will make a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund at Georgia. It was the second Lott IMPACT Player of the Week award for Jones this season.

Max Bullough, LB, Michigan State. Had 9 tackles, 2.5 for losses and 2 sacks in 16-13 win over Wisconsin.

Travis Johnson, DE, San Jose State. Had a sack and 6 tackles in 31-20 win over Texas State.

Jake Knott, LB, Iowa State. Had 11 tackles, forced a fumble and broke up a pass in 35-21 win over Baylor.

J.C. Percy, LB, Boise State. Led Broncos with 10 tackles and had a sack in 45-14 win over Wyoming.

T.J. McDonald, S, USC. Led Trojans with 13 tackles, including 1.5 for losses. USC lost to Arizona, 39-36.

Lott IMPACT Trophy Names Twenty Quarter-Finalists

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – Twenty of the premier defensive players in the nation have been named quarter-finalists for the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, it was announced today.

Heading the list are players who have dominated the mid-season All-American teams: Cornerback Johnthan Banks of Mississippi State; Linebacker Arthur Brown of Kansas State; Linebacker Jarvis Jones of Georgia; Defensive Tackle Star Lotulelei of Utah; Safety T.J. McDonald of USC; Safety Eric Reid of LSU and Linebacker Manti Te’o of Notre Dame.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy is named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott and honors the student-athlete who has the biggest IMPACT on his team on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

Semi-finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 13 and four finalists Nov. 28. The four finalists will be invited to the Ninth Annual Lott IMPACT Trophy Awards Ceremony in Newport Beach Dec. 9.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Condoleezza Rice.

CHASE THOMAS OF STANFORD NAMED LOTT IMPACT PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – Stanford Linebacker Chase Thomas has been named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week.

Thomas, a 6-4, 248-pound senior from Marietta, Georgia, led the Cardinal with seven tackles, including three for losses, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in a 21-3 win over Cal.

For the season, Thomas leads Stanford with 42 tackles and nine tackles for losses.

In recognition of Thomas’ performance, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the Lott IMPACT Trophy, will make a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund at Stanford.

Eric Reid, S, LSU. Had 11 tackles as LSU defeated Texas A&M, 24-19.

John Simon, DT, Ohio State. Forced an incomplete pass on last play of overtime to ensure Buckeyes’ win over Purdue, 29-22.

Mike Taylor, LB, Wisconsin. Led badgers with 12 tackles, one for a loss, in win over Minnesota, 38-13.
